Il nome Gallipoli (Caddhrìpuli in dialetto gallipolino) deriva dal Greco "Kalé Polis", il cui significato è "città bella". La città, situata lungo la costa occidentale della penisola salentina, è protesa sul mar Jonio con un litorale di circa 20km comprendente anche le località di Punta Pizzo, Baia verde, Rivabella e Lido Conchiglie, ed è divisa in due parti: il borgo, che accoglie la parte più moderna della città, e il centro storico, posto su un''isola collegata alla terraferma con un ponte seicentesco. Di notevole importanza storico-naturalistica è l''Isola di Sant''Andrea, circa un miglio al largo del centro storico, caratterizzata dalla presenza di animali selvatici, come il Gabbiano corso.
L''intera costa vanta una spiaggia bassa e lunghissima composta da bianche dune, fatta di splendidi lidi sabbiosi con acqua cristallina molto frequentati d''estate, ed è intervallata da scogliere che si aprono ad arenili e angoli nascosti.

The name Gallipoli (Gallipoli Caddhrìpuli dialect) is derived from the Greek "Kale Polis", which means "beautiful city". The town, located along the west coast of the Salento peninsula, reaches the Ionian Sea with a coastline of about 20km which also includes the towns of Punta Pizzo, Green Bay, Lido Rivabella and Shells, and is divided into two parts: the village, which includes the most modern part of the city, and the old town, located on an island connected to the mainland by a seventeenth-century bridge. Of great historical importance is the nature island of St. Andrew, about a mile off the city center, marked by the presence of wild animals, such as the Audouin's Gull.
The entire coastline has a shallow beach and white sand dunes composed of long, made of gorgeous sandy beaches with crystal clear water are very busy in the summer, and is interspersed with cliffs opening to beaches and hidden corners.
